On a brisk Saturday afternoon at Liberty State Park, runners gathered for the 2nd Annual Salute To Our Veterans 5k; an event that not only celebrated fitness and camaraderie but also honored our nation's heroes. With over 150 enthusiastic registrants, the race promised an exciting display of athleticism and community spirit.
The weather gods smiled upon the runners with a breezy yet comfortable 50-degree day, creating the perfect conditions for a run along the scenic route. The flat course wound its way through Liberty State Park, offering participants breathtaking views of lower Manhattan, the iconic Freedom Tower, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. As the runners pounded the pavement, the cityscape served as a poignant backdrop, reminding everyone of the liberties and freedoms we enjoy, thanks to the sacrifices of our veterans.
Among the sea of determined runners, Alexandra Selberg emerged victorious in the Women's Division, representing the renowned Dashing Whippets Track Club based in NYC. Selberg's impressive speed and endurance secured her the overall win, showcasing the grit and determination that epitomizes the spirit of the event. Rowan Dickson crossed the finish line in 2nd overall and secured the Men's title in commanding fashion.
Beyond the thrill of competition, the Salute To Our Veterans 5k had a deeper purpose. The event aimed to make a meaningful impact by raising funds for Habitat For Humanity of Newark. As the runners pushed their limits, they were fueled not only by personal goals but also by the knowledge that their efforts were contributing to a cause that would build homes and change lives.
