Belleville Veterans Day 5k Brings Enthusiasm and Excitement to Essex County
The chilly morning of November 12, 2023, set the stage for the Belleville Veterans Day 5k, a spirited event that brought the community together on the streets of Belleville, New Jersey. With the starting and finishing line located outside the iconic Whiskey Priest bar on Union Street, participants and spectators alike gathered to honor veterans and embrace the challenge of the 5k run.
As the runners assembled at the starting line, the crisp 40-degree temperature confirmed that New Jersey has finally accepted the autumn season. The sky, clear and sunny, promised ideal conditions for the race ahead. The atmosphere was charged with excitement and camaraderie, as runners donned their racing gear and shared last-minute tips and encouragement.
After a few words from Mayor Mike Melham, the race kicked off at 9am. Participants navigated the course through the streets of Belleville, passing by local landmarks and neighborhoods. The route showcased the beauty of the town, with fall foliage adding a colorful backdrop to the event. Breaking the tape in 16:37, Elson Smajlaj repeated his dominant performance from last year. This is Elson's second win in as many Sunday's after his commanding victory at the 8th Annual Hero 5k. On the women's side, Julia Leftwich edged out Mary Mamora by eleven seconds to take the Women's division.
The Whiskey Priest, where the race both began and concluded, served as a focal point for the community celebration. The pub's exterior buzzed with energy as friends and family awaited the return of
the runners. The smell of hot beverages and snacks wafted through the air, providing a warm contrast to the cool weather.
The competitive spirit among the runners was palpable as they approached the final stretch. The cheers from the crowd intensified as the first runners sprinted towards the finish line, their determination evident in every stride. Local veterans, honored guests of the event, stood proudly at the finish line, saluting each participant for their dedication and effort.
The post-race atmosphere was one of triumph and joy. Participants exchanged stories of their journey through the 5k, sharing tales of personal records and newfound achievements. Medals were awarded to acknowledge not only the fastest runners but also those who embodied the spirit of the Veterans Day event.
